Student Success: Georgia State Sets Record For Largest, Most Diverse Freshman Class In University History

Georgia State University has set records for the largest enrollment and largest freshman class in its history.

Enrollments topped 54,000, with more than 5,200 freshmen entering the Atlanta Campus as the largest, most qualified and most diverse freshman class in the institution’s history. The previous records were set last year with more than 53,000 students and 4,600 freshmen.

More than 2,500 freshmen are starting at Georgia State’s Perimeter College campuses.

Georgia State’s Perimeter College Ranks Among Nation’s Best for Student Success

Students attending Georgia State University’s Perimeter College successfully transfer to four-year degree programs at dramatically higher rates than students at other two-year colleges around the nation, according to a new ranking by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Perimeter College ranks 20th in the nation for student success among 838 two-year colleges in the ranking, which tracked students who entered college in 2015.

Nearly 83 percent of Perimeter College students who began classes were still enrolled, had transferred to other programs or completed their programs by 2018, according to the ranking.

Georgia State Ranks No. 2 in Nation in Innovation, No. 3 in Commitment To Teaching in Rankings by U.S. News & World Report

Georgia State University is ranked the second most innovative university and third for its commitment to undergraduate teaching in the 2020 Best Colleges edition of U.S. News & World Report magazine.

It’s the second year in a row Georgia State is ranked the second most innovative institution. It’s also the second year in a row the university has been ranked in the top three among national universities for its “unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.” Georgia State ranked first among public universities in the category.

The innovation and undergraduate teaching rankings are based on a survey of presidents, provosts and admissions deans at colleges and universities across the country.

Student Success: Georgia State Sets Degree Conferral Record, Welcomes Large & Diverse Freshman Class

Georgia State University will set a record for overall enrollment this fall semester, with more than 53,000 students enrolled and with the largest, most qualified and most diverse freshman class in the institution’s history.

Students will come from 49 states and more than 160 nations and territories, also a record. More than 4,600 freshmen will enter the university with a record average high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.53.

Of the freshman class, 36 percent is Black, and the university will set records for the number of Hispanic and Asian students enrolled as freshmen. More than 3,300 freshmen will start this fall at Georgia State’s Perimeter College campuses.

Study Abroad for All: Studying Sign Language in France

Ca’Shawn Brown, a rising junior in the Honors College at Georgia State University, spent most of May studying French, sign language and deaf culture in Montpellier and Paris, France.

Brown, who is majoring in applied linguistics, received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for the summer semester. The scholarship allows students of limited financial means to study abroad, which Brown said is an integral part of her education.

“The world is so much bigger than the United States,” Brown said. “I want to explore outside of America and gain a better understanding of various cultures, languages and perspectives.”

Student Success & Inclusion: Perimeter College Students Participate In NASA Aerospace Scholars Program

Hector Enciso, Joel Goodrum, Dinah Johnson, Mariyaah Muttalib and Fkreyesus Mesfn of Georgia State University’s Perimeter College were among 403 students selected from across the U.S. to attend the four-day NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) onsite experience.

To compete for a seat with NCAS, students must complete a five-week online research program, which requires them to pass a series of tests and write a research paper on Mars. If selected, they are assigned to one of NASA’s 10 field centers across the country for an opportunity to meet engineers, tour facilities and collaborate on team projects.

NCAS is funded in part by NASA’s Minority University Research and Education Program (MUREP), which focuses on connecting underrepresented and underserved students in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines with practical learning experiences outside the classroom.

The EPIC Program: Innovation in the Core Curriculum

As advancing technologies change the career landscape students enter on graduation, higher education continues to examine how best to provide a curriculum that prepares students to thrive. At Georgia State, a provost-led, cross-university team has been working to re-examine elements of the university’s core coursework with a focus on ensuring Georgia State’s students have opportunities to develop foundational skills to help them become adaptable problem-solvers, overcoming the academic challenges they face in their studies and creating solutions to the issues they’ll tackle as they graduate into their professions and lives.

The team has developed EPIC (Experiential, Project-based and Interdisciplinary Curriculum). In fall 2019, Georgia State will pilot EPIC, with elements including a number of highly-connected Freshman Learning Communities (FLCs) and Project Labs.

Student Success: Perimeter Academy Student Success Program Expands to Clarkston, Dunwoody Perimeter College Campuses

Perimeter Academy, a student success program at Georgia State University’s Perimeter College, is expanding.

Beginning June 10, the academy, which gives new students an early boost toward a successful college career, will be offered on Georgia State’s Clarkston and Dunwoody campuses, as well as at its original Decatur Campus location.

Introduced in 2017 as part of Georgia State’s Learning, Income and Family Transformation (LIFT) initiative, Perimeter Academy is a three-semester, extended-learning community packed with support services to help new students succeed in their first year of college.

Students accepted to Perimeter Academy begin in the summer to get a head start on their academic journey, said Amanda Emery, Perimeter Academy project director. They receive access to free workshops on financial planning, individualized study skills, academic coaching and peer mentoring, as well as leadership retreats and service opportunities.

Student Success: Reshaping the Curriculum

The University System of Georgia has awarded Georgia State University’s Department of History on the downtown campus with the Regents’ Award for Teaching Excellence by a Department or Program, recognizing innovative and engaging efforts to transform teaching and learning in the department’s curriculum.

The nomination packet was submitted by Jeff Young, Rob Baker and Jared Poley, who have worked together to include data visualization, in addition to the incorporation of the Reacting to the Past (RTTP) teaching and learning concept in history courses, and redesign of U.S. history and world history courses.

These efforts have resulted in an increase in student engagement, and a reduction in DFW rates – the rates of students who either earn grades of D or F, or withdraw from the course.

Student Success: Georgia State Closes Achievement Gaps In Graduation, Retention Rates At Perimeter College

The graduation rate at Georgia State University’s Perimeter College has more than doubled over the past three years and the rate of Perimeter students either successfully earning their associate degrees or transferring to bachelor’s degree programs is at a record 58 percent.

Perimeter College, which offers two-year associate degree programs, became part of Georgia State during consolidation with Georgia Perimeter College in 2016.

Since consolidation, Perimeter College’s three-year graduation rate has improved from 6.5 percent to 15 percent. The gap between the graduation rates of black and white students has been halved, and now white, Latino, and Pell Grant students all graduate at the same rate. The previous record for Perimeter students earning their associate degrees or transferring to bachelor’s degree programs was 51 percent.
